About the Founder
Sara (Buchanan) Martino comes from a large family (the middle of seven children), which inspired her to pursue a career working with children. She spent a decade as a special education teacher with a masters degree in literacy and a reading specialist certification. In addition to her love for teaching, Sara’s had a lifelong passion for “crafting” and expressing her creativity through art.
In the fall of 2016, Sara and her husband welcomed their son into the world and watching him develop has been an amazing experience. Naturally, one of her favorite things to do with him is play! While there are a few great indoor play areas for children in the suburbs of Philadelphia, there aren’t any in this neighborhood. Sara spent months dreaming about a local place where caregivers and children can meet to play, learn, and connect. So with the help of her husband and her village of family and friends, she created Village Play Space.
Community has always played a huge role in Sara's family. In fact, the desire to bring the community together was what inspired Sara's father to open Handel's Homemade Ice Cream back in 2005. Sara, too, wanted to carry on this tradition of community-building by creating a unique space that provides an opportunity for both children and adults to play and learn. She hopes that Village Play Space will do just that!
